About London Symphony Orchestra
The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), the oldest of London's symphony orchestras, was founded in 1904 when 50 members of the Queen’s Hall Orchestra broke away to form Britain’s first self-governing ensemble. Since then, the LSO has built a global reputation for its artistic excellence, pioneering spirit, and prolific recording output.
A trailblazer in the recording industry, the LSO was among the first orchestras to produce gramophone records and film scores; today, it holds the distinction of having more recordings to its name than any other orchestra worldwide. It was also the first orchestra to feature in its own peak-time television series.
Since 1982, the LSO has served as Resident Orchestra at the Barbican Centre, where it performs around 70 concerts each year alongside a diverse family of artists. In total, the orchestra gives over 120 concerts annually and tours extensively worldwide.
