Herbert von Karajan was the only major orchestral conductor to independently produce concert films and, later, video performances; an artistic visionary ahead of his time.
Maestro for the Screen explores this lesser-known side of Karajan’s legacy. Director Georg Wübbolt interviews those closest to him - his director of photography, editor, secretary, producers, and musicians from both the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras - to offer a rare, behind-the-scenes portrait.
The film includes performance footage from the Unitel and Telemondial archives, along with never-before-released, digitally remastered material from the RBB (SFB) and ORF collections. It also features Karajan himself, reflecting on the medium in various television appearances.
The documentary can be streamed on demand with unlimited replays through the On Air website, mobile, and TV apps.
