About the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is Finland’s oldest professional symphony orchestra, founded in 1882 by composer Robert Kajanus. It holds a significant place in Nordic musical history, having premiered nearly all of Jean Sibelius’s symphonic works under the composer’s own baton.
Today, the HPO comprises 102 musicians and performs over 100 concerts annually, reaching audiences of more than 100,000 both at home and abroad. Its primary venue is the Helsinki Music Centre, where it serves as a resident ensemble alongside the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Sibelius Academy.
The orchestra also reaches audiences who may not be able to attend concerts at the venue by sending smaller ensembles out across the city, supporting youth performances, and connecting with special groups through an active education programme. In a recent initiative, the HPO invited all children born in Helsinki in 2020 to experience live music with their families over the next seven years as part of the HPO Kids programme.
