About Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) was a composer, best known for being deeply inspired by nature, mythology, and national folklore and creating symphonic works that blended Romantic intensity with a distinctive, often stark, Nordic sound. Over the course of his career, he composed seven symphonies, numerous tone poems, and works such as Finlandia, The Swan of Tuonela, and Valse Triste

His early works channelled patriotic fervour and lush Romanticism, while his later compositions turned toward formal clarity and deep introspection. Celebrated across Europe and America, Sibelius became a major figure in the evolution of 20th-century orchestral music.

The Helsinki Music Centre and the Sibelius Academy continue his legacy, drawing generations of artists to his music's unique combination of drama, melancholy, and elemental beauty.
