In 1981, bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee formed Mötley Crüe in Hollywood, California, alongside guitarist Mick Mars and lead vocalist Vince Neil. The collective emerged with hard rock and heavy metal origins on their first two albums ‘Too Fast for Love’ and ‘Shout at the Devil’, while their third album ‘Theatre of Pain’ joined the first wave of glam metal. They are also well known for their elaborate stage performances, thrilling crowds with flame thrower guitars, roller coaster drum kits, and pyrotechnics. Their 2008 album ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ debuted at number four on the Billboard chart, selling 100,000 copies in its first week.
Following what was planned as their ‘last’ concert in 2015, Mötley Crüe reunited three years later with four new songs for its Netflix biopic The Dirt. The 2019 soundtrack went straight to number one on the iTunes All Genres Album Chart, number three on the Billboard Top Album and Digital Album charts and reached the Top 10 worldwide. In 2022, the band hit the road on their first major tour in seven years, co-headlining a North American tour with Def Leppard.
Mötley Crüe has undergone many line-up changes throughout their career, leaving Sixx as the only consistent member. Regardless, the group has sold over 100 million records worldwide and achieved seven platinum and multi-platinum certifications, nine Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, and twenty-two Top 40 rock hits.
