Toto rose to fame in the late 70s, fusing elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, hard rock, R&B, blues, and jazz.
David Paich (keyboards, vocals) and Jeff Porcaro (drums) formed the band in Los Angeles, California, alongside David Hungate (bass), Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Steve Porcaro (keyboards, vocals), and Bobby Kimball (vocals), emerging with their self-titled debut album in 1978. The album – led by the Top 5 single ‘Hold the Line’ - launched them into the American limelight, while their fourth album ‘Toto IV’ (1982) broke international ice. Their most famous single ‘Africa’ topped the Billboard Hot 100 and ‘Rosanna’ reached number two on the same chart, making them one of the best-selling groups of the 80s pop scene.
Following a series of line-up changes in the mid-80s and 90s, the American collective continued to tour worldwide and released several more global top-ten albums. Lukather and Paich remained the only original members of Toto, releasing their final studio album ‘Old is New’ in 2018. The Musician Hall of Famers have sold over 40 million records worldwide and won multiple Grammy Awards, notably Album of the Year for ‘Toto IV’.
