Pat Metheny

About Pat Metheny

Named an NEA Jazz Master, Pat Metheny is the only artist to have won 20 Grammy Awards across ten different categories. The guitarist, composer, and bandleader's signature music style fuses a singular, euphoric sense of harmony with Afro-Latin and Brazilian sounds alongside rock, funk, global folk, and jazz.

Metheny emerged in 1976 with his debut single ‘Bright Size Life’ and self-titled album two years later, earning critical and commercial success with its euphoric lyricism, dynamics, and rhythmic ideas. The musician formed the Pat Metheny Group (PMG) in 1977, releasing albums ‘Still Life (Talking)’ and ‘Letter from Home’ both of which received gold certification. They went on to win their first Grammy for the 1982 album ‘Offramp’.

In 1981, Metheny teamed up with keyboardist Lyle Mays for ‘As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls’, topping the jazz charts. On the PMG’s 1992 album ‘Secret Story’, the group collaborated with Pinpeat Orchestra, the London Orchestra, the Choir of the Cambodian Royal Palace, and Toots Thielemans. PMG separated in 2010.

Metheny’s solo release ‘What’s It All About’ won a Grammy for Best New Age Album in 2011, while his Unity Band (featuring saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and bassist Ben Williams) won ‘Best Jazz Instrumental’ album in 2013. In 2021, he released ‘Road to the Sun’ which featured his first works for classical guitar, joined the ongoing project live Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), and two years later produced another solo album ‘Dream Box’.

Metheny has released over 40 studio albums throughout his music career and sold 20 million records worldwide.
