Lucas van Merwijk

Lucas van Merwijk (born 1961, De Bilt, The Netherlands) is one of Europe’s leading drummers and a renowned specialist in Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Active since the early 1980s, he has built an international reputation as a performer, bandleader and educator.

Repeatedly voted Best Jazz Drummer and Best Fusion Drummer in the Benelux by readers of De Slagwerkkrant (1993-2020), van Merwijk is known for his powerful groove, deep musicality, and stylistic versatility.

He is the founder and leader of several acclaimed ensembles, including Drums United, Van Merwijk’s Music Machine, and the Cubop City Big Band, with whom he has toured extensively and collaborated with a wide range of artists across jazz, Latin, and world-music scenes.

In addition to his performing career, van Merwijk is a dedicated educator. He serves as Professor of Drums in the Jazz Department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and as Professor of Drums & Latin Percussion in the World Music Department at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam.
