About Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton, CBE, rose to fame as a British rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

Ranked second in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time and fourth in Gibson’s Top 50 Guitarists of All Time, the musician first started playing in a series of local bands, including The Yardbirds from 1963 to 1965, and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers from 1965 to 1966. Post Mayall, he formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce, focusing on arty, blues-based psychedelic pop. Following four successful albums, Cream disbanded in ‘68.

Clapton then moved into his next blues-rock band project, Blind Faith, alongside Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech, who produced one album and one tour before separating. He released his first self-titled solo album, making the Top 40 hit ‘After Midnight’ and then, in 1970, formed Derek and the Dominos with Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon. Like Blind Faith, the band released one successful album ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs’ which spawned Clapton’s signature song ‘Layla’.

Clapton then embarked on his official solo career, recording several chart-topping albums and songs, including a 1974 cover of Bob Marley’s ‘I Shot the Sheriff’, the country-fueled ‘Slowhand’ (1977), the pop-rock ‘August’ (1986), and the emotionally packed ‘Unplugged’ (1991) which featured the tear-jerker ‘Tears in Heaven’.

In 1996, he scored another Top 40 hit with ‘Change the World’ and released the Grammy award-winning ‘My Father’s Eyes’ two years later. Clapton has achieved 17 Grammy Awards, a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and four Ivor Novello Awards throughout his music career. He is also the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – once as a solo artist and the other two as part of The Yardbirds and Cream.
